Open or closed? Trust works differently in each. With open source, you choose to trust because you can see inside. With closed software, you can't really consent. You are simply forced to trust.
Jose and Watson explore how a shared language changes who gets to take part. In software, Eric Evans calls it ubiquitous language. Outside software, Christopher Alexander builds on a similar idea. It is a language that runs between the people who implement a system and the people who experience it, technical or not. When everyone shares that language, everyone is developing the product.
That is the argument for a truly bottom-up approach instead of a top-down one.
